Swiggy was founded in Bangalore in August 2014 by Sriharsha Majety and Nandan Reddy, repurposing their shelved e-commerce project around the insight that Zomato owned restaurant discovery but nobody owned delivery. Swiggy built its own fleet, raised aggressively through FY16 when losses jumped 65x, and became India's fastest unicorn — a 2018 Livemint profile credits the fleet-first bet.

The war then expanded into quick commerce: Instamart's 45-minute grocery launched in August 2020. Revenue scaled from ₹2,547cr (FY21) to ₹5,705cr (FY22) with a ₹3,628.9cr loss, and pre-IPO discipline arrived in two rounds of layoffs (8–10% of 6,000+ staff in Jan 2023, then ~400 jobs in Jan 2024). Net profit never arrived: Q4 FY25 loss ₹1,081cr, Q1 FY26 ₹1,197cr, Q3 FY26 ₹1,065cr.

The listing finally priced the story on 13 November 2024: ₹390 per share, ₹11,327cr raised (~$1.35B), about 3.6x subscription, a thin open followed by a ~17% rise to a ₹1 lakh-crore market cap — India's biggest consumer-tech IPO of 2024 and its second-largest IPO overall that year after Hyundai.

India's #1 food-delivery app by orders, ₹11,327cr IPO (Nov 2024) that rose ~17% to a ₹1 lakh-crore market cap — after a decade of cumulative losses.

The fleet was the moat: Zomato owned the menus, Swiggy owned the bikes — owning delivery raised switching costs and set the standard the market eventually copied.

Two pre-IPO layoff rounds plus Instamart showed the market a company that could expand and cut — the 3.6x-subscribed debut priced that in.

When the incumbent owns discovery, win the rails: the scarce asset in platform markets is often the logistics nobody wants to build — losses convert into an IPO if the fleet lead becomes order share.

Post-IPO Swiggy kept the #1 food-delivery spot by orders while Instamart fought a brutal quick-commerce price war; losses continued (Q3 FY26: ₹1,065cr). The Zomato-vs-Swiggy war, started in 2015, now runs on 10-minute grocery rather than 30-minute meals.
