Vaughan-Bassett Furniture was one of the Bassett family 'cousin companies' in Galax, Virginia. In 1983 John D. Bassett III left the larger Bassett Furniture to run it, modernizing the business, but through the 1990s cheaper Taiwanese and Chinese makers flooded the market.

From 2000 to 2002 Chinese furniture imports skyrocketed and US factories began to close. When Bassett visited China he was told the only way his company could survive was to shut its factories and sell Chinese furniture.

Instead of accepting that, he led a campaign with other American manufacturers, hired top lawyers and filed an antidumping petition before the U.S. International Trade Commission against Chinese bedroom furniture. The coalition fought a costly campaign that divided US producers.

Bassett won. The Chinese companies were forced to pay a form of restitution, which kept Vaughan-Bassett and other small companies afloat. It was too late to save most of the industry, but Vaughan-Bassett soldiered on and preserved its factory jobs.

Vaughan-Bassett won its antidumping case and kept afloat, saving hundreds of jobs in the Virginia furniture belt at a time when most local factories were closing.

Bassett refused the logic that offshoring was the only survival path.

He organized a coalition of US manufacturers to file a collective antidumping petition.

The case gave the family firm a way to compete on documented, non-dumping terms.

The restitution kept the company solvent while competitors closed.

When a family firm is being out-priced by dumped imports, a legal or regulatory route can be the last viable lever — but the campaign must be run before the industry has already collapsed.

Vaughan-Bassett survived while most of the US wooden-bedroom-furniture industry collapsed. The win is credited with saving hundreds of jobs; Bassett's story became the subject of Beth Macy's book Factory Man, which frames it as a family business fighting globalized offshoring.
