What was changed
After explosive growth, Xiaomi's smartphone sales declined in 2016 and it fell from the top of China's smartphone market. Founder Lei Jun blamed supply-chain problems caused by rapid growth; in May 2016 he announced that phone R&D and supply-chain teams would report directly to him.
Xiaomi's IPO prospectus describes the year as a deliberate recalibration: 'We deliberately slowed our growth to focus on strengthening three key aspects of our business: innovation, quality and supply management.' It also built offline Mi Home stores and expanded overseas, especially in India.
In 2017 Xiaomi 'quickly returned to rapid growth': revenue rose 67.5% to RMB114.6 billion, smartphone units sold climbed from 48.8 million to 80.6 million, and the company ranked fourth globally. It listed on the Hong Kong exchange in July 2018.
What it achieved
Revenue grew from RMB68.4B (2016) to RMB114.6B (2017) and smartphone units sold rose from 48.8M to 80.6M, restoring Xiaomi to the world's top-four smartphone makers.
Why it worked
Putting the founder directly over supply chain made the fix a top priority.
Slowing growth to fix quality avoided the reputation spiral that kills phone brands.
Offline retail and India diversified channels beyond the saturated domestic online market.
The rebound proved the low-margin hardware-plus-services model could survive a crisis.
What can be applied
Fast growth can outrun operations; the fix is to slow down deliberately: Xiaomi spent 2016 rebuilding supply, quality and management, then re-accelerated with a foundation that held at global scale.
Aftermath
Xiaomi stayed among the world's top smartphone makers after the rebound, went public in 2018, and later expanded into electric vehicles. The supply-chain discipline rebuilt in 2016 carried into its broader hardware ecosystem.
