In a first-person Fortune essay published 25 May 2026, Hippo President & CEO Richard McCathron describes the turnaround he led after becoming CEO in June 2022, at the start of one of the toughest periods in the home-insurance insurtech's history. The low point came in Q3 2023; from there through the end of 2025, he writes, Hippo drove a turnaround from a $41 million net loss to $58 million in net income.
The diagnosis: Silicon Valley's growth-above-all-else mindset had been imported into an industry where scale does not automatically deliver profitability. Climate volatility had changed the underlying economics — losses were harder to predict, the cost of absorbing risk climbed, and insurers raised rates simply to break even, with premiums up as much as 70% in five years and carriers retreating from high-risk zones. The deeper problem, he argues, was that some insurers had stopped pricing risk accurately.
The turnaround involved no single breakthrough or dramatic cost-cutting exercise. Hippo paused new business in some areas, reduced exposure in concentrated catastrophe-prone regions, resisted pressure to chase growth, and in 2025 sold its homebuilder distribution network. It doubled down on underwriting and risk selection while expanding access to the new-home market from six homebuilders to more than 50.
'Sometimes you have to cut off the arm to save the body,' McCathron writes — and if done right, the arm grows back. He adds that long-term resilience requires investing upstream in prevention: stronger homes, better mitigation, updated building standards and insurance models designed around evolving climate risk.
What it achieved
From a $41 million net loss at the Q3 2023 low point to $58 million in net income by the end of 2025, per McCathron (self-reported in the essay).
为什么有效
The old assumptions — stable risk, predictable loss patterns, growth delivering profitability — no longer held in a climate-volatile market.
Pausing new business and cutting catastrophe exposure traded top-line growth for survivable economics.
Selling the homebuilder distribution network in 2025 shed what Hippo no longer did best, while underwriting stayed.
Expanding new-home access from six builders to more than 50 kept a growth channel aligned with risk selection.
可以借鉴什么
In a business where risk is compounding, growth can be the fastest way to fail — retrenchment that protects underwriting quality is a strategy, not a retreat.
后续
By the end of 2025 Hippo reported $58 million in net income (self-reported by McCathron), against a $41 million net loss at the Q3 2023 low. He positions the insurer's next phase around prevention and accurate risk pricing rather than expansion. The material records no third-party verification of the figures.
