Leeds Bradford Airport has opened a new Central Search Zone with extra-long security lanes that allow almost double the number of passengers to be screened per hour, per an October 2026 BBC report. Individual lanes can now process up to 600 passengers per hour, compared with approximately 350 previously.
The technology also changes what passengers do: electronics and liquids under 100ml can stay in bags rather than being pulled out for separate scanning. The area adds dynamic virtual queue management, letting the airport's team actively manage passenger flow and cut waits at busy periods, plus six eGates for boarding-pass scanning into the search area.
The rebuild includes dedicated routes for passengers needing special assistance and Fast Track customers. CEO Vincent Hodder called it a 'landmark moment' and a 'truly transformational investment', saying the airport was introducing some of the most advanced security processing technology available at any UK regional airport.
The zone is the first phase of a capacity plan: by the end of the year two further lanes come into operation, which will double the airport's current security screening capacity. The airport frames the work as part of a long-term vision to modernise infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and serve a growing region.
What it achieved
Per-lane throughput up from approximately 350 to 600 passengers per hour; with two more lanes coming by year end, total security screening capacity doubles.
为什么有效
The binding constraint was per-lane throughput, and the new lanes move it by roughly 70% — 350 to 600 passengers an hour — inside the same terminal.
Keeping electronics and liquids in bags removes the manual unpacking bottleneck that slows every passenger in conventional lanes.
Dynamic virtual queue management converts the new hardware's capacity into actual wait-time reductions during peaks.
The rollout is phased by design: two more lanes by year end double total screening capacity without closing the existing operation.
可以借鉴什么
Security throughput is a systems problem, not a staffing problem: newer scanning hardware plus queue orchestration can double capacity inside the same floor space.

As of the October 2026 opening, the Central Search Zone is live with six eGates and special-assistance and Fast Track routes; two additional lanes are due by the end of the year to complete the doubling of security capacity.
