In June 2025 SpiceJet reported its first full-year profit in seven years: ₹48 crore net profit for FY25 against a ₹409 crore loss the year before, including ₹319 crore of net profit in Q4 alone — a twelvefold jump from the previous quarter — and an industry-leading 88.1% passenger load factor.
The repair had three moves. Cash: a ₹3,000 crore Qualified Institutional Placement in September 2024, ₹736 crore from earlier funding rounds and ₹294 crore more from chairman and managing director Ajay Singh in March 2025; foreign institutional investors, including Goldman Sachs, lifted their stake from 2% to 25%. Settlements: more than a dozen disputes resolved with Boeing, De Havilland, Aircastle, BBAM, Carlyle Aviation, Genesis, Willis Lease, MTU and other lessors, and the ₹579 crore Kalanithi Maran arbitration award repaid in full.
The largest settlement set the tone: Export Development Canada accepted ₹1,233 crore against a ₹1,700 crore claim — a ₹467 crore benefit. Housekeeping closed the gap: ₹160 crore of long-pending provident fund dues cleared and the IOSA safety certification renewed. With creditors settled, SpiceJet added ten aircraft in FY25, took full ownership of 13 EDC-financed Q400s, launched 24 new flights in March 2025, flew about 15,500 Maha Kumbh pilgrims (up 18% year on year), and started a daily non-stop Delhi–Kathmandu route in May. Acuité and CareEdge upgraded its credit ratings.
What it achieved
First annual profit in seven years: ₹48 crore FY25 (vs ₹409 crore loss FY24); Q4 net profit ₹319 crore; FII stake rose from 2% to 25%
为什么有效
Disputed, contingent liabilities had sat on the balance sheet for years; settling them at a discount converted unpredictable litigation into fixed, priced costs.
Fresh equity — the ₹3,000 crore QIP plus promoter money — funded the settlements instead of operations, keeping cash available to unground aircraft.
Clearing employee provident fund arrears and renewing IOSA certification repaired operational credibility, not just optics.
Strong demand and an 88.1% load factor meant every reactivated aircraft quickly generated revenue.

A distressed balance sheet is a negotiation: paying creditors a discounted settled lump sum — funded by fresh equity rather than operating cash — can buy years of breathing room in one stroke.

Challenges remain: SpiceJet's market share is under 5% in an Indian market that has more than doubled since 2014, Akasa Air has gained ground at key airports, and reaching a 100-aircraft fleet by 2026 will need sustained capital and discipline. The rating upgrades from Acuité and CareEdge support further fundraising, and engine overhauls with partners like StandardAero are ramping capacity back up.
