Alamo Drafthouse built a cult following with its dine-in cinema format — food and drinks served during strictly enforced, no-talking screenings. When COVID-19 closed theaters nationwide in 2020, the model had no revenue and the chain filed for Chapter 11 on March 3, 2021.

The bankruptcy sale handed control to Altamont Capital Partners and affiliates of Fortress Investment Group, with founder Tim League and other original investors staying on as minority partners. Alamo emerged at the end of May 2021 having closed underperforming venues, ending with nearly 40 locations.

The plan was growth, not survival. On emergence the company announced five new theaters — first locations in Manhattan, Staten Island, St. Louis and two in Washington, D.C. — opening through 2021 and 2022, and kept expanding afterward.

By June 2024 Alamo had 50 locations across the United States, including 15 franchised sites, making it the seventh-largest movie-theater chain in North America — the scale that prompted Sony Pictures to acquire the company on June 12, 2024.

Alamo emerged under new owners with plans for five new theaters, reached 50 US locations by 2024 (7th-largest chain in North America), and was acquired by Sony Pictures.

Chapter 11 let Alamo shed pandemic-era liabilities and underperforming leases.

New owners Altamont and Fortress recapitalized the brand instead of liquidating it.

Founder Tim League stayed, preserving the format and its customer loyalty.

Expansion into first-time markets like Manhattan and D.C. grew the network from ~40 to 50.

That scale made Alamo attractive to Sony as an experiential cinema platform.

When a pandemic freezes a format's revenue, restructure around the strongest asset — the brand and its cult following — then grow the network while rivals shrink.

Sony Pictures took Alamo Drafthouse under its own banner as a division, betting on the dine-in experience as a differentiator for theatrical exhibition. The case shows a niche chain using bankruptcy as a reset: the format was sound, the capital structure was not, and the post-emergence expansion — not the filing — is what created the exit.
