In 1993 Wang Dongsheng, then 35, pooled money with colleagues to take over the state-owned Beijing Electronic Factory, a vacuum-tube plant built in the 1950s that could not compete as China opened up and was near bankruptcy.

Instead of retreating, Wang bet the company on liquid-crystal display fabs, which required enormous capital and years of losses. He imposed a rule that came to be called Wang's Law: panel performance had to at least double every 36 months at a given price point.

By 2019 BOE Technology Group was the world's biggest display-panel maker, worth about $18bn, employing more than 68,000 people in 19 countries and supplying Apple and Huawei. Its 10.5-generation line B9 helped Chinese makers take about a third of large LCD TV panel shipments in the first quarter of 2019.

BOE's rise came as Korean rivals struggled; LG Display and Samsung Display posted heavy LCD losses in the same quarter, and BOE also moved into flexible OLEDs, taking a share of that market from nearly nothing.

BOE became the world's biggest display-panel maker, with a valuation of about $18bn, more than 68,000 staff and customers including Apple and Huawei.

The decision to keep pouring capital into fabs through losses outlasted rivals who had to answer to shareholders.

Wang's Law forced a relentless pace of improvement that made capacity the strategy.

Chinese state support let BOE raise the enormous capital a fab requires.

Moving early on 10.5-generation fabs created a scale lead in large panels.

Patient capital plus a hard internal rule to double panel performance every 36 months can let a latecomer out-run richer incumbents through brutal multi-year investment cycles.

BOE went on to become a leading supplier to global phone and TV makers and a significant holder of display-related patents, while Korea's panel makers exited or shrank their LCD businesses. It is now cited as a case of a Chinese SOE buying its way into a technology leaders club through patient, high-capex investment.
