What was changed
LC Sign sold illuminated retail signs to business customers at a time when China's slowing domestic economy made export orders harder to win. Its salesman Tony Zhu had joined in 2022, but the turning point was to use TikTok and Instagram as a prospecting channel: he performed short English-language factory skits, often using exaggerated accents, instead of posting plain product catalogs.
The choice was not simply to become funny. Zhu said a video that was too commercial lost reach, while one that was too entertaining could deter buyers, so the team balanced product demonstrations with character and comic timing. Recommendation algorithms put the factory in front of people beyond its usual buyer pool; customers from the Americas, Europe, and Africa visited after seeing the videos.
The channel became a measurable sales asset. After the videos went viral in late 2023, LC Sign had about 445,000 Instagram followers and 148,200 on TikTok. Zhu reported one business inquiry per 1,000 TikTok views, with 3% to 10% of inquiries converting to orders; his boss made him a partner and moved him into full-time content.
What it achieved
LC Sign's pages reached about 445,000 Instagram and 148,200 TikTok followers; Zhu reported one inquiry per 1,000 TikTok views, with 3%–10% converting to orders.
Why it worked
Traditional trade fairs and wholesale stalls were costly ways to reach overseas buyers.
Short-video recommendation systems could discover buyers who were not already searching for light boxes.
A recognizable salesperson gave an industrial product a human face and made a distant factory easier to approach.
Tracking inquiries and conversion kept entertainment tied to export sales.
What can be applied
A manufacturer can make a hard-to-differentiate product memorable by giving the salesperson a human voice, then tracking whether attention becomes qualified inquiries.
Aftermath
LC Sign made Zhu's content work a full-time role and gave him a partnership stake. Other factories began asking for his advice, showing that the decision changed not only lead generation but also who carried the company's market-facing identity.
