The Game & Watch, the 1980 handheld that helped launch Nintendo's hardware business and sold more than 43 million units by 1994, had been off shelves for decades. In September 2020 Nintendo announced a reproduction, Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros., to mark the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.

Demand was immediate. When Nintendo opened online orders on the evening of September 3, 2020, its official store was flooded and stopped accepting orders the next day. The $49.99 device launched on November 13 with a color screen, three games and a clock, produced in limited quantities until the end of March 2021.

At launch the system was selling out rapidly across retailers, with Nintendo's own store among those out of stock. The revival showed that a 40-year-old hardware brand could still move product when attached to a beloved franchise and a clear anniversary story.

The Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. sold out rapidly at launch and online preorders closed within a day; Nintendo produced it only until March 2021.

Mario's 35th anniversary gave the product a built-in reason to exist.

A limited production window created urgency.

The original's 43-million-unit history guaranteed nostalgia.

Affordable pricing made it an impulse collectible.

A tiny product can revive a whole brand if it is framed as a scarce celebration: Nintendo made the Game & Watch a limited 35th-anniversary artifact, and scarcity plus nostalgia did the marketing.

The Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. sold out rapidly at launch, and Nintendo continued limited production until March 2021 as promised. The revival became a template for Nintendo's anniversary merchandising, pairing classic hardware with flagship characters to convert nostalgia into hardware sales.
