What was changed
Getir was founded in 2015 in Istanbul by Nazim Salur (of the BiTaksi taxi app): dark stores plus own couriers delivering 1,500+ SKUs in about ten minutes. Funding stayed modest until a $38M Series A in December 2019 (with Michael Moritz's Crankstart), at roughly 58,000 orders a day before COVID.
COVID launched the blitz: London (Jan 2021), Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Spain and Italy, then the US — nine countries, 1,100 dark stores and 40 million app downloads by 2022, plus M&A (Weezy 2021; Gorillas for ~$1.2B in December 2022). Mega-raises followed the story: $300M (Mar 2021), $550M at $7.5B (Jun 2021), and $768M at $11.8B (Mar 2022, Mubadala-led) — on more than $1.8B of total funding. Then the model broke: 4,480 layoffs (14% of ~32,000 staff, May 2022), and a $500M rescue round at $2.5B (Sep 2023).
Retrenchment came fast: France (2022), Spain and Italy (2023), Germany with Gorillas wound down (May 2024), the US (Apr 2024) — and in April 2024 Getir said it was quitting the UK, Germany, Netherlands and the US because those markets were 'only 7% of revenue'. In September 2024 Abu Dhabi's Mubadala took control of the Turkish delivery business ($250M injection; GetirFinance split: founders 40%, Mubadala 32%). In November 2025 Getir Yemek was sold to Uber Eats, and in June 2026 Turkey's Competition Board approved Uber's takeover of the food and grocery arms with a $500M investment commitment.
What it achieved
A peak $11.8B (2022) on $1.8B+ raised — then a $2.5B down round, 4,480 layoffs, market exits, Mubadala control (2024) and a 2026 Uber takeover.
Why it worked
The 10-minute promise was a capital trap: dense dark-store networks only paid off at peak demand, and unit economics broke when normalization plus inflation hit — regulation closed the rest.
Venture math reversed: $1.8B raised priced growth, and $14B flooded rapid delivery in 2020-21 before funding fell 60%+ in 2022 — Getir kept its Turkish core but sold its future to Mubadala, then Uber.
What can be applied
A category-defining promise is not a business model: if unit economics only work at peak demand, the funding cycle — not the P&L — sets your valuation, and the exit sets who owns you.
Aftermath
Getir remains Turkey's quick-commerce brand, but inside Uber: the Competition Board approved the June 2026 takeover with a $500M Turkey commitment, after Mubadala's 2024 control ($250M) and the 2025 sale of Getir Yemek to Uber Eats. Total funding exceeded $1.8B; the post-mortem is the standard arc of category innovation, funding mania, then bust.
