HBL Engineering, the Hyderabad group long known for industrial batteries, redirected its growth into railway safety electronics as Indian Railways rolled out Kavach, the indigenously developed train-protection system. In 2025 the company secured two South Central Railway contracts worth 163.62 crore rupees: 132.95 crore rupees to fit Kavach across the 446-kilometre Vijayawada-Ballarshah section with 48 stations and 10 locomotives in 18 months, and 30.67 crore rupees to upgrade existing Kavach from version 3.2 to 4.0 across 350 kilometres.

The orders pushed the total order book to 4,029.05 crore rupees, a figure that now dwarfs the company's legacy battery business, which Moneycontrol noted was broadly stable while the electronics segment drove growth. The mix shift turned into earnings: June-quarter consolidated profit jumped 79 percent year on year to 143 crore rupees on revenue up 16 percent to 602 crore rupees, and the September 2025 quarter saw net sales surge 134.74 percent to about 1,223 crore rupees as Kavach execution ramped.

Markets repriced the company quickly. After the June 2025 results the stock rallied 13 percent to become the top gainer in the Nifty 500, and the Kavach contract announcement itself had lifted shares 5 percent. Peers such as Kernex Microsystems rose alongside it, underlining how the Kavach pipeline reshaped the whole rail-safety supply chain.

Order book of 4,029 crore rupees on Kavach contracts; Q1 FY26 profit up 79% to 1.43 billion rupees; September-quarter revenue up 134.74% year on year.

It bet on a state-backed standard early. Kavach became Indian Railways' mandated train-protection system, giving qualified vendors a repeatable nationwide rollout rather than one-off projects.

Its battery-manufacturing base transferred. Installation, electronics and field execution across thousands of route kilometres rewarded the same industrial discipline that batteries built.

It upgraded ahead of demand, taking the version 3.2 to 4.0 upgrade contract, so the same customers would pay twice as the standard evolved.

When a regulator-funded standard creates a new market, the supplier with manufacturing depth can convert it into a multi-year order book that dwarfs its legacy business.

By 2026 HBL's consolidated quarters showed the transformation in numbers, with September 2025 net sales up 134.74 percent year on year and December 2025 up 93.99 percent, per Moneycontrol earnings trackers. The order book stood above 4,000 crore rupees after fresh South Central Railway awards, and the company had also won Indian Railways contracts to supply on-board Kavach equipment for coach factories. Growth remains tied to the pace of the national Kavach rollout, a dependency the market now prices into the stock.
