Jerónimo Martins began as a grocery shop in Lisbon's Chiado district in 1792 and, three families later, remains family-controlled (SFMS) with a 1989 stock listing. By the early 1990s the Portuguese market was saturated. In 1995 entrepreneur Mariusz Świtalski opened the first Biedronka — the 'ladybug' discount store — in Poznań; in 1997 Jerónimo Martins bought the young chain (200+ stores) from local electronics-and-retail distributor Elektromis, keeping the ladybug brand and its local format.

The Polish prescription was classic hard discount: everyday-low-price, high turnover, thin margins, and own labels — Światowid, Mleczna Dolna, Fruvita, Dada — built around family staples. Scale came in steps: the absorption of Plus's 120 Polish stores in 2008 carried the chain past 1,000; store 1,500 in March 2010; store 3,000 in February 2019; all while staying family-funded.

The numbers by 2024: 3,730 stores and 84,000 employees — Poland's largest private employer. Group revenue reached €33,464M in 2024 (net profit €599M), of which Biedronka contributed €23,571M (70.4%). The formula is now being exported east: the first Biedronka stores opened in Slovakia in March 2025, with a target of at least 50.

Poland's #1 grocer and largest private employer: Biedronka's 3,730 stores and €23.6B sales made up 70% of the group.

Poland was a blank canvas: no discount culture, rising wages, suspicion of foreign big-box — a local brand name and Portuguese discount expertise sidestepped the backlash.

Own labels plus everyday-low-price made Biedronka the default family shop in inflation; the price gap vs hypermarkets compounded into an unclosed moat.

When home is saturated, export the format where the model is missing but demand is structural: keep the local brand and language, own-label the range — proximity and price do the marketing.

Biedronka stayed Poland's No.1 grocer through 2024 (3,730 stores, 84,000 staff) and the group's 2024 revenue hit €33.46B with €599M profit; March 2025 brought the first Slovakian stores with a 50-plus target. The 1792-founded, family-controlled group is the reference case of a small-country retailer that found its second age in the east.
