What was changed
Swatch, the plastic watch that rescued Swiss watchmaking in the 1980s, had spent years fading from young buyers' wrists. In March 2022 Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek Jr. tried something the industry considered dangerous: the MoonSwatch, a $260 bioceramic Swatch carrying the exact design language of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, Omega's roughly $6,000+ icon. It was sold in only about 180 Swatch boutiques, never online.
The launch caused queues and store closures from London to Dubai, and the bet paid off at industrial scale. Swatch Group's official 2022 key figures call the MoonSwatch 'a best seller, with over 1,000,000 watches sold' and 'ongoing high demand', alongside group net sales of CHF 7,499 million and an operating margin up to 15.4%.
The halo ran both ways. In 2023 the group reported record net sales of CHF 7,888 million, up 12.6% at constant exchange rates, 'specifically helped in the lower price segment thanks to Swatch', with Omega, Tissot and Swatch all breaking records in North America. Demand for the MoonSwatch remained continuous, and Swatch repeated the formula with a Blancpain collaboration in 2023.
What it achieved
Over 1,000,000 MoonSwatches sold in 2022 alone; group net sales hit CHF 7,499M in 2022 and a record CHF 7,888M in 2023, up 12.6% at constant rates.
Why it worked
Swatch borrowed Omega's most sacred design instead of inventing a new look, buying instant credibility for $260.
Boutique-only, no-online distribution in ~180 stores manufactured queues and global headlines.
A bioceramic quartz build kept the price at impulse level for a generation that had stopped wearing watches.
The collab stayed inside Swatch Group, so the halo, the traffic and the margin all accrued to one owner.
What can be applied
Lending a luxury icon's design to your cheapest brand can revive the cheap brand without hurting the icon — both brands' stores reported record traffic.
Aftermath
MoonSwatch demand stayed 'continuous' through 2023-2024, the line was extended with Moonshine Gold variants, and Swatch cloned the playbook with Blancpain's Fifty Fathoms in 2023 — Blancpain boutiques then could not meet demand for the original model either. The collaboration is credited with reviving the Swatch brand's relevance with Gen Z and lifting the whole group's entry-price segment.
