What was changed
At Reliance Industries' 46th annual general meeting in August 2023, chairman Mukesh Ambani announced that his children Isha, Akash and Anant would join the board as non-executive directors. Akash already chaired Reliance Jio, Isha led retail, and Anant ran the new energy business.
The appointments were put to shareholders in October 2023 and passed with 98.21%, 96.63% and 92.75% of votes respectively.
What it achieved
Shareholders backed the move with 92–98% votes, keeping India's most valuable company stable through a leadership handover.
Why it worked
Each child had already run a major Reliance business, so the board seats reflected real roles
Formalizing succession cut the key-man risk that investors price into family firms
The AGM announcement made the plan public, ending years of speculation
What can be applied
Announcing succession early and publicly removes the biggest risk a family conglomerate faces: uncertainty about the next generation.
Aftermath
The handover was gradual: Mukesh Ambani stayed chairman while the three children took board seats and ran the group's biggest growth engines. Reliance continued to invest across telecom, retail and new energy with no leadership vacuum.
