ServiceNow was best known for IT service management, but large enterprises were trying to digitize work across HR, customer service, operations and industry processes. The decision was to make the Now Platform a cross-enterprise workflow layer.

The company kept investing in platform capabilities, partner integrations, industry workflows and AI while selling to large enterprise customers. By the end of 2023 it reported more than 8,100 customers.

The platform strategy showed in the numbers. 2023 total revenue grew 24% to $8.97 billion, subscription revenue grew 26% to $8.68 billion, and net income climbed from $325 million to $1.73 billion.

2023 revenue reached $8.97B, subscription revenue was $8.68B, and net income rose to $1.73B.

Workflow automation sat between established systems from Oracle, SAP, Salesforce and Workday instead of trying to rip them out.

Large customers could start with one workflow and expand into adjacent departments.

A subscription model made expansions and renewals compound over several years.

A narrow workflow product can become strategic infrastructure when it connects departments rather than replacing one system of record.

ServiceNow continued adding AI and process-mining capabilities to the Now Platform. The 2023 results showed that the company had become a broader enterprise software platform, not just an IT ticketing vendor.
