Workday began with human capital management, but its strategic opening was that companies manage people and money together. It chose to keep building Financial Management, Planning, Spend Management and analytics on the same cloud platform.

That made the product harder to copy as a point HR tool. By FY2024, Workday said it served more than 10,000 organizations, more than 65 million users, and more than half of the Fortune 500.

The suite strategy coincided with a profit turn. FY2024 revenue rose 17% to $7.26 billion, subscription services revenue rose 19%, subscription backlog reached $20.9 billion, and GAAP net income was $1.38 billion after a FY2023 loss.

FY2024 revenue reached $7.26B; subscription backlog rose 27% to $20.9B and net income was $1.38B.

Finance and HR share planning, headcount, payroll and compliance problems that benefit from one data model.

Selling additional applications to existing customers expanded contracts without starting every sale from zero.

Long subscription contracts made backlog a visible sign that the platform strategy was compounding.

A SaaS company can escape single-department limits by making one trusted data model useful to another executive buyer.

Workday continued to add AI features, marketplace partnerships and industry accelerators. Its FY2024 results showed that the company had become a broader enterprise management platform rather than only an HR cloud.
