What was changed
On 2 September 2017, Vingroup — Pham Nhat Vuong's property-and-retail empire, Vietnam's largest private conglomerate — broke ground on the country's first automobile complex at Hai Phong: 335 hectares, designed for 100,000–200,000 vehicles a year, with investment of up to $3.5 billion. Vietnam had never had a full domestic carmaker.
Speed was the weapon. The factory was inaugurated on 14 June 2019, three months early; the first cars were delivered by end-July, just 21 months after groundbreaking — a record the state broadcaster credits to VinFast. At CES in January 2022 the company announced it would stop internal-combustion production by end-2022, one of the first automakers in the world to go all-electric, with a five-segment lineup shaped by Pininfarina and Torino Design. Its first Vietnamese EV, the VF e34, took 3,692 orders in 12 hours.
The listing crowned the story: on 15 August 2023 VinFast debuted on Nasdaq through the Black Spade SPAC — opened at $22 (vs $10 SPAC price), closed at $37.06, a market cap near $85 billion, larger than Ford ($48B) and GM ($46B). Vuong owns about 99% of the 2.3 billion shares; the founder and Vingroup had injected ~$9.3 billion by June 2023. The operating math stayed brutal: FY2024 deliveries 97,399 (+192%), revenue $1.81B (+58%) and a net loss of $3.18B, with gross margin at −57.4% including one-offs. In November 2024 Vuong pledged up to VND 50 trillion (~$2.1B) of grants to keep going.
What it achieved
A national carmaker born in 21 months; FY2024 EV deliveries 97,399 (+192%) with revenue $1.81B — and a Nasdaq debut that briefly valued it above Ford at $85B.
Why it worked
A founder with ~99% control is the governance that makes a $3B-a-year burn executable: no outside board would hold this course, and Vingroup's cash cow paid the bills.
Going 100% EV ahead of legacy giants was a first-mover bet on the EV super-cycle, funded by a listing priced on story rather than profit.
What can be applied
Dynasties can buy factories and design, but not demand: manufacturing bets need a founder who can fund years of losses — the listing prices the story, not the P&L.
Aftermath
FY2024: 97,399 EV deliveries (+192%), revenue $1.81B (+58%) and a $3.18B net loss; VinFast pushed into Europe (VF 6, VF 8) and the US with 38 dealers across 16 states, and in November 2024 Pham Nhat Vuong committed up to VND 50 trillion of personal-company grants. Shares that opened +255% on debut traded far below the $85B print — the gap between listing theater and operating reality remains the case's open question.
